The Benefit of Values Coaching
There can be no doubt that values determine our beliefs and attitudes towards life. So how then can we utilise these to influence the outcomes of our athletes? Our values influence our behaviours both on and off the field through providing a framework for decision making, as well as the way in which we perceive the world around us. So why should you chat about values with your athletes?
Values play a crucial role in shaping the behaviour of athletes, which will ultimately influences their actions and outcomes. Our behaviour is a manifestation of our values, and it reflects our attitude towards different situations and people. Our behaviour, in turn, influences our actions, and the decisions we make.
Our actions are the manifestation of our behaviour, and they can have a significant impact on our performance on and off the field.
For instance, athletes who value hard work, discipline, and teamwork are likely to exhibit these values in their behaviour by training rigorously, following a healthy diet, and working collaboratively with their teammates.
This behaviour then leads to positive actions such as better performance, increased motivation, and improved team dynamics. Through these actions, athletes (and teams) are more likely to achieve favourable outcomes like winning matches, achieving personal goals, and building a successful career on and off the field.

"You need to be competent before you feel confident"
So often I have players or students tell me that all they need is 'to feel more confident'. They feel that if they can present as being more confident than they will be able to perform better. ABSOLUTE MYTH! What people need to do is to put the work in to become more COMPETENT - this will then allow them to perform and compete with CONFIDENCE. When you put the work in then you are able to know that you have the ability and the skills (competence) in the endeavour you are undertaking - thus allowing you to step up to the challenge with the knowledge that you have done the work and able to perform the skill.
Do you ever wonder why goalkickers, golfers or tennis players are able to consistently perform at a high level? Why professional sportspeople seem to be able to execute at a high level? It is not because they are confident - it is because they have out in the hours and hours of work, both physically and mentally, to know they can perform the task at hand. They then seek opportunities to perform these tasks because that is what they train for!
So you want to improve your confidence?

So you want to improve your confidence?
- Put the work in - you need to rehearse the skill you are trying to master - over and over again!
- Mentally rehearse the skill - close your eyes and go through the steps
- Understand that the way to get better is to FAIL FORWARD! Make mistakes to get better - then learn from them and adjust accordingly
- Listen to your coach - they are there to help you!
When actions have purpose they lead to a result. Don't waste time selling the vision if you are not prepared to put in the work to deliver that vision.
Purpose Driven Action
Leadership and coaching is often about ‘Doing The Do’. Over the years I have been involved in numerous sporting teams and corporate environments in some leadership capacity. The key to success in all of these environments has been getting in there and doing what needs to be done, and in doing so leading others to do the same.
It is important to set the vision and lead people to imagine and innovate. You can’t just live on visions though - people want to see you putting in daily work to ensure that the goals are reached. It is essential as a leader that you think about your next steps - once the vision is cast what is necessary for YOU TO DO that will allow you and your team to reach that vision.
Daily action leads to results - what is your daily action?
How do you show up each day and ‘DO THE DO’?
